Retail Spending Surge in July: Stats NZ Data Analysis (2026)

Retail spending in New Zealand has experienced a notable rebound in July, offering a much-needed boost to the retail sector after a sluggish June. The latest data from Stats NZ reveals a 3.5% increase in core retail spending compared to July of the previous year, a significant improvement from the modest 0.4% growth seen in June 2025. This surge in spending is particularly evident across hospitality, clothing, and durable goods categories.

One of the key drivers behind this spending spree is the decline in fuel prices, which has left households with some extra cash to splurge. As Denise Garland, Retail NZ's advocacy manager, puts it, "Kiwis took the opportunity to treat themselves." This is especially true for the apparel sector, which witnessed its largest annual increase in spending in two years.

However, not all sectors benefited equally. Fuel spending saw a notable decline of 4.3%, while motor vehicle spending, excluding fuel, remained relatively stagnant with a minimal 0.1% decrease. This suggests that while consumers may be willing to indulge in non-essential items, they are still cautious about larger purchases.

The increase in hospitality spending is an intriguing development. Garland suggests that this could be an indicator of improving consumer confidence. The FIFA World Cup, which took place in July, may have played a significant role in drawing people out to bars and restaurants, creating a positive ripple effect for the retail sector.

"Events are a huge boost for retail," Garland explains, "as they bring more foot traffic to town and city centers, encouraging people to browse and shop on the high streets."

Despite the encouraging July figures, Garland cautions against reading too much into them. She highlights that July was an exceptional month with a unique combination of factors, including a major international sporting event, a public holiday, and an unusually high number of Fridays.

"It's difficult to say whether this is a sign of broader improvement in consumer confidence or a result of these specific circumstances," she adds.

As we move forward, it will be interesting to see if this spending trend continues and whether it indicates a shift in consumer behavior or a temporary blip. One thing is certain: retailers will be hoping for a sustained boost to their sector, especially during what is typically a slower period of the year.
